Wu Zun’s ‘Butterfly Lovers’ performed badly
Wu-Sa romance were publicised for nothing
Wu Zun’s movie debut ‘Butterfly Lovers’ sales were bad, only sold 970,000 in Taipei
Wu Zun’s movie debut ‘Butterfly Lovers’ didn’t turn out as expected, in Taipei area the movie sales were only 970,000, Wu Zun and Charlene Choi (Ah Sa) Wu-Sa romance were publicised for nothing
Was criticized that both leads not compatible
To move into the movie industry, in 2008 Wu Zun only made a guest appearance in GTV ‘Hot Shot’, the rest of the time was used to film his movie debut ‘Butterfly Lover’, tried his best to create and publicize ‘Wu-Sa romance’ for promotion, even brought his ‘other half’ to his hometown Brunei.
Unexpectedly the movie was only shown for slightly more than 2 weeks since it started showing at the beginning of October. The movie was taken down so soon because it only received 970,000 in the movie sales. Comparing to Jerry Yan’s first movie in 2004 which is also the only movie work so far, the sales was worse than ‘Magic Kitchen’ which was 1,280,000.
Most reviewers had opinions on the choosing of the role and the plot with regards to Wu Zun’s ‘Butterfly Lovers’. Some feel that Wu Zun looks too pretty; Ah Sa’s acting as the male didn’t look like two men in love, in face in looked like two girls in love! The main reason for the bad sales of ‘Butterfly Lovers’ according to those not in the industry is because Wu Zun’s promotional events were too little, from the beginning until the end there was only the press conference and movie premiere, it was nothing like the China promotion where he rushed to 7 cinemas in a day.
Wu Zun: Affected by ‘Cape No. 7’
After hearing that the sales in Taiwan were not as expected, his management company Comic Productions Co. said that they won’t put the blame on Wu Zun. Although the sales in Taiwan was not good but in China it was still selling well with more than RMB30,000,000 (around NT140,000,000)
With regards to the failure of his debut movie, Wu Zun was already mentally prepared, he said, “Should be affected by ‘Cape No. 7’” However he threw the sales figure to the back of his head, considering that he had learnt a lot from the movie. Through the fans/audience, he can also get the immediate feel which is different from dramas; he called himself a newbie in movies, and felt happy after he had done his best.
